The time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. (2 Timothy 4:3–4, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “The chief danger that confronts [this generation is] religion without the Holy Ghost, Christianity without Christ, forgiveness without repentance, salvation without regeneration, politics without God, heaven without hell.” ― William Booth.
When he said it, it was a prediction that “the time will come.” Now, the time has come. It crept into our culture in barely perceptible increments and is now deeply entrenched in many congregations that claim the teachings of Jesus. Instead, they have been seduced by the lies of Satan.
Without “sound doctrine” in a growing number of sanctuaries, how can we expect the masses to “put up” with it? The truth no longer suits “their own desires,” and the myths that Booth predicted tickles their itching ears.
My Advice – “I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.” (2 Timothy 4:1–2, NIV 1984). It will take “careful instruction” because people have been conditioned to believe the lies and reject the truth. “Great patience” will also be required because we did not get here overnight.
