In Order That

We have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way. (Colossians 1:9–10, NIV 1984).

My Advice – This phrase has always puzzled me — “live a life worthy of the Lord.” For it was Paul who also said, “I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.” (Romans 7:18, NIV 1984). So how could “nothing good” live a “life worthy of the Lord?” Just as we could not obtain our salvation on our own, we cannot live a worthy life on our own.

But as we grow in Christ, we are increasingly filled “with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” With the knowledge, wisdom and understanding, we are being transformed into the likeness of Christ. Christ the “worthy” one. And “what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:2, NIV 1984).

My Advice – Like Him. Worthy, because He has made us worthy. “Only let us live up to what we have already attained.” (Philippians 3:16, NIV 1984).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
