You received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” (Romans 8:15, NIV).
“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the LORD Almighty. (Malachi 1:6, NIV 1984).
My Musings – The sense I get out of the Malachi verse is not “if I am a father,” but rather “since I am Father,” or “because I am Father.” And for this reason, He should not have to ask, “where is the respect due me?” Especially since sonship is not something we are “due.” It is something we “received.” Not in exchange for something that we gave, but as a free gift. Free to us, that is. It cost Him dearly. All the more reason He is due respect, as well as honor and gratitude. When we do not give Him the respect He is due, we dishonor Him and show a lack of gratitude.
My Advice – To cry “Abba, Father” is privilege far beyond our ability to fully comprehend. Let’s be thankful and respectful.
