Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.” (Luke 11:46, NIV 1984).
My Musings – What if we replaced the phrase “you experts in the law” in the above text with “you self-righteous Christians?” What percentage of those claiming to be Christians do you think the verse would fit? Bona fide Christians are beneficiaries of grace, not the heavy burden of the law. Why would we expect non-believers to be any more successful in carrying that burden than we were? The only way for us to “lift [a] finger to help them” is by sharing the Gospel of Christ.
My Advice – Let’s not be one of those self-righteous Christians. If the Gospel tells us anything, it tells us that it is impossible to be self-righteous. Only the grace of God makes us right.
