Only Slightly Better?

The Brew Is A Musing

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?” (Matthew 5:13, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “Any man worth his salt will stick up for what he believes right, but it takes a slightly better man to acknowledge instantly and without reservation that he is in error.” (President Andrew Jackson).

Sticking up for what we believe is right does not give us license to disparage or hate those who believe otherwise. If we truly believe we are right, what they deserve is our pity and charity. There are times when we find that our beliefs are in error. Rather than stubbornly cling to them, we must acknowledge that we are wrong. To Christians this involves confession (admit we were wrong), repentance (turn away from the wrong) and asking forgiveness (from those we may have disparaged or shown contempt).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
