When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor.” And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. (Matthew 13:53–58, NIV 1984).
Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. All those who heard him were astonished and asked, “Isn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?” Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ. (Acts 9:19–22, NIV 1984).
My Musings – Our past life does not define us. Whether marked by humility (“isn’t this the carpenter’s son?”), or notoriety (“isn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem?”). For, “[we] no longer live, but Christ lives in [us].” (Galatians 2:20, NIV 1984). The past means nothing. The future means everyhting.
My Advice – “Whenever the devil brings up your past, remind him of his future.”
Amen!
