Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge?” (Job 38:1–2, NIV 2011).

My Musings – With this verse, one of my favorite passages in the Old Testament begins. It goes on for four chapters. Well worth taking the time to read. If it does not humble you, then something is wrong. But I digress.

I’ve read this numerous times, but this time one word jumped out at me, with an insight I had not seen in other translations. The word “plans” is substituted for “counsel.” Upon further research, the word counsel is described as “a plan, as opposed to a whim or caprice.” What was happening to Job was not some cosmic wager that Satan maneuvered God into. I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
