Eager Desires

The Brew Is A Musing

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it…Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts. (1 Corinthians 12:27, 29–31, NIV 1984).

My Musings – My sense is that we tend to desire, perhaps even envy, the gifts that others have. But when Paul says, “eagerly desire the greater gifts,” it could mean nothing more than to desire the gifts that God has gifted you with. As Paul wrote earlier in this passage, the diversity of the parts of the body are necessary in order for the body to function properly. When we pursue the giftedness of others to the neglect of our own, we are harming the proper functioning of the body.

My Advice

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
