They [the Israelites] entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.'” (Exodus 19:2–6, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “Out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.” Only God’s calling of Abraham and his descendants, the Israelites, can explain why this tiny nation (“of all the nations“) exists today. While they did cease for periods of time to be nation (because they did not “obey me fully and keep my covenant“), God has never forgotten his promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
My Advice – They are not the most numerous people, nor the most powerful nation. And throughout history have probably had more enemies than any other nation. But they are a favored nation. Any nation or people that would venture to cause them harm would do well to heed the words of God. “I will contend with those who contend with you.” (Isaiah 49:25, NIV 1984).
