Get Off This Path

These are rebellious people, deceitful children, children unwilling to listen to the Lord’s instruction. They say to the seers, “See no more visions!” and to the prophets, “Give us no more visions of what is right! Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions. Leave this way, get off this path, and stop confronting us with the Holy One of Israel!” (Isaiah 30:9–12, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Rebellious, deceitful and unwilling to listen. Especially when it’s the Lord’s instruction. Wanting to hear pleasant things and illusions, not being confronted by God with what is right. Just leave us. He could have, you know. Left us on the path. The broad path leading to destruction.

But He didn’t. There would be some who would listen. Some who would leave their rebellious and deceitful ways. Who would see through the illusions of the evil one and discern the lies wrapped deep within the pleasantries. Who would leave the crowded path to take the narrow path less trodden.

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both. Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” (from The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost).

My Advice – Which road should we take? They diverge. To take one, we must leave the other behind. But which one? If we are “[willing] to listen to the Lord’s instructions,” we will know “whether [to] turn to the right or to the left, [because our] ears will hear a voice behind [us], saying, ‘this is the way; walk in it.'” (Isaiah 30:21, NIV 1984).

The other might look to “[have] perhaps the better claim,” it is just an illusion. This path with the seemingly better claim “leads to destruction. [The one less traveled by] leads to life. [Be among the] few [who] find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14, NIV 1984). We will not be sorry we cannot travel both.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
