My Musings – With a special needs child, like our oldest son Joshua, we had a variety of providers visiting our home over the years (nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists, etc.). On occasion, they would all meet together in our home to discuss Josh’s care and our concerns as parents. One such meeting occurred early evening to accommodate my work schedule. It was winter, so it gets dark early. I arrived home to find all of them chatting with my wife Eileen — sitting in the dark. None of them had the nerve to ask the 110 lb. petite blind woman if they could turn on a light.
My wife Eileen no longer lives [or sits] in perpetual darkness. Yet she does “not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun.” In her “for ever and ever” she has “[seen] His [Jesus’] face, and His name [is] on [her] forehead.” (Revelation 22:4, NIV 1984). She has also seen the face of our son Joshua, something that had been denied her in life.
When Eileen learned that further treatment of her cancer would be futile, she began planning her funeral. Her final testimony to put an exclamation point on the life she lived. She asked our youngest son Joel and his partner, who operate a novelty t-shirt business, to design a shirt for her to be buried in. Eileen was no fashion diva; she wanted to be buried in a t-shirt and blue jeans. This is the wording she wanted on the shirt — “I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see.” They even included an accurate graphic of the musical notation. She ended her life he way she lived it, reflecting His light.
My Advice – “This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1 John 1:5–7, NIV 1984).
“The blood of Jesus.” The only way to come into the light. The only way to “have fellowship with Him.“ We were all born lost. Jesus “came to seek and to save what was lost.” (Luke 19:10, NIV 1984). But we must allow ourselves to be found by Him. We all were born “blind.” “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus [asks us]. [Our reply should be], “Rabbi, I want to see.” (Mark 10:51, NIV 1984).
