Where Is True North on Your Compass?

This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” But you said, “We will not walk in it.” (Jeremiah 6:16, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “AI [artificial intelligence] developer Anthropic has met with a wide range of religious scholars and leaders, from Pope Leo XIV and other Catholics to Jewish, Sikh, Mormon, and evangelical thinkers [to] seek their help with Claude, their cutting-edge AI model…to persuade [AI] models to abide by a moral code that will protect humanity.”

“The key question [asked]: ‘Even if AI models can be taught to behave morally, whose morals should they reflect?’ [A spokesperson for Anthropic responded]: ‘We do think that there’s some shared notion of goodness that cuts across society in some very broad way, and it seems like these models understand a lot of virtues. So, [we] think there’s something there that is a shared thing that we can all engage with.'”

“Pope Leo warns…’Those who control AI will impose their own moral vision, which will become the invisible infrastructure of these systems.’ And this ‘vision’ will be as subjective as the people who frame it. Here we find the central problem of our secularized society: by abandoning biblical morality, we are left with the ‘morality’ of our own choosing. With no true north on our compass.” (Excerpted from “The Daily Article,” by Dr. Jim Denision, The Denison Forum, October 1, 2026).

What is the real danger here? Artificial intelligence or “those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and [moral] in their own sight.” (Isaiah 5:20–21, NIV 1984). By uploading “morality” to the cloud, are we not merely reprogramming “sound doctrine…[with] what [our] itching ears want to hear?” (2 Timothy 4:3, NIV 1984).

This will always be the path that the “itching ears” of the culture follows. Lacking the guidance of the Holy Spirit (certainly true of AI) and being slaves to the sin nature it rejects the “ancient paths.” They declare by their actions that “we will not walk in it.” But we must not allow the “ancient paths” of the true Church to be further obscured by AI. Neither human wisdom (morality) nor artificial intelligence is a substitute for the “ancient paths” of the Holy Scriptures. So, we need “signposts” along the way to keep the compass pointing to true north.

First, “do not let this [Bible] depart from [our] mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that [we] may be careful to do everything written in it.” (Joshua 1:8, NIV 1984), allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture. In this way, we can be one “who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15, NIV 1984). Correct handling leads to careful doing.

Second, listen for the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Then, “with [our] own eyes [we] will see [the truth]. Whether [we] turn to the right or to the left, [our] ears will hear a voice behind [us], saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'” (Isaiah 30:20–21, NIV 1984). Let’s be wary whenever AI says, “this is the way; walk in it.” “For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.” (Matthew 7:13, NIV 1984). And that broad road is very likely “some shared notion of goodness that cuts across society in some very broad way.”

Third, “let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as [we] see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24–25, NIV 1984). As we see AI encroaching, and other technology “advancing” it becomes easier to “give up meeting together. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17, NIV 1984), but they can only do so if they come in contact with each other. We must be mindful, however, of the assembly that we “engage with.” For just as “not all who are descended from Israel are Israel,” (Romans 9:6, NIV 1984), not all that call themselves a church are a Church.

Fourth, “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” (Ephesians 6:18, NIV 1984). “In order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.” (2 Corinthians 2:10–11, NIV 1984). “For Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness.” (2 Corinthians 11:14–15, NIV 1984). Pray to be alert, lest “some [AI] shared notion of goodness that cuts across society” masquerades as righteousness and so deceives us.

My Advice – With the advent of AI, the world may be “[standing] at the crossroads” where “true north” and “sound doctrine” become even harder to determine. It is unlikely that AI will develop “a moral code that will protect humanity.” But it need not be that way for followers of Christ. The moral code to save humanity already exists. Believers have already accepted God’s path (Jesus Christ). If they also follow sound Scriptural principles, they need “not fear, for I [God] am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, NIV 1984).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
