Anything You Ask For

“Again, I [Jesus] tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by My Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in My name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:19–20, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Proceed with caution when applying this passage. The surrounding context has to do with church discipline (preceding verses) and forgiveness of offenses by fellow believers (following verses) and should be read in that light.

It would appear to me then, that verse nineteen is specific to this context and we should be careful about how broadly we interpret “anything.” It is not a magic incantation to weaponize our selfish desires.

Verse twenty on the other appears to be a general reminder of His presence when His people (plural, as few as two or three) are gathered together. How very important it is to keep Him and His will central to the gathering.

My Advice – Pay extra attention to the three most important words (my humble opinion) in this passage – “in My Name.” Which in context of the overall passage of church discipline; motivated by correction, forgiveness and restoration, and not vengeance.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
