Check It Out

Acts 17:11Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see what Paul said was true. (NIV 1978)

My Musings – Paul was as trustworthy as they come, but the Bereans still made sure that what he was saying was scriptural. The Word is the ultimate authority, not our pastors, Sunday school teachers or mentors.

My Advice – Make sure when you receive a message that you check it out for yourself. Many things will sound true but nevertheless be wrong. Do this even if the source is otherwise trustworthy (yes even when it is from me). People are fallible; the Word of God is not.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.

  1. Good post and advice. We cannot afford to be lazy Christians. For centuries it was taught in churches that Jesus was born in a barn and that there were 3 wise men who visited him that night. Didn’t happen that way. It pays to be a berean Christian.
