Be Somebody

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”  (1 Peter 2:9–10, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “I always wanted to be somebody, but now I realize I should have been more specific.”  (Lily Tomlin).

  • Somebody – A person of importance or authority.  We “are the people of God.” You cannot be more important than that. “That [we] may declare the praises of Him who called [us].”  Since it is God who calls us, there can be no greater authority.
  • Specific – Clearly defined or identified.  “[We] are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.”  “Chosen” by God to be part of His “royal” family.  To minister (“priesthood“) to those who have not yet come into the family.  Declared righteous (“holy“) through the blood of His Son, as a result “a people belonging to God.”  This should be specific enough.

My Advice – First, make sure you are “somebody.”  Second, make sure you live up to the family name.  “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.”  (Ephesians 4:1, NIV 1984).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
