“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped.” (2 Timothy 3:16–17, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “The Bible is the Word of God, which errs, is the quintessential oxymoron. If we eliminate the first part, ‘The Bible is,’ we get ‘The Word of God, which errs.’ If we parse it further and scratch out ‘the Word of’ and ‘which,’ we reach the bottom line: ‘God errs.’ The idea that God errs in any way, in any place, or in any endeavor is repugnant to the mind as well as the soul. Here, biblical criticism reaches the nadir of biblical vandalism. (R.C. Sproul, in the foreword to John MacArthur’s “The Inerrant Word”).
To paraphrase C. S. Lewis — “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say: ‘The Bible is the Word of God, but it errs.’ That is the one thing we must not say. You must make your choice. Either the Bible is the Word of God and is inerrant, or it is not the Word of God at all. Let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His ‘breathing out’ His Words, but the human teachers recorded them in error. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
My Advice – Accept it all, or accept it not at all. Those are the only two choices. You must make your choice.
Well said.
