Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. (1 Peter 2:16, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech, and expression—everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way—everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want—which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants—everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear—which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor—anywhere in the world. That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation.” (Franklin D. Roosevelt, excerpted from the State of the Union Address to the Congress, January 6, 1941).
“No vision of a distant millennium?” “Attainable in our own time and generation?” The “greatest generation” is rapidly slipping away. Fading into a memory of the things they “fought for.” Paradoxically, to paraphrase another U.S. President (Abraham Lincoln), someday soon, ‘the world will little note, nor long remember what they did.” Current events strongly suggest that these four freedoms will not “long endure,” “anywhere in the world.”
It never really was attainable in our or any other generation. It is, rather, a vision of what now does not seem like a distant millennium. We used the freedom that many of past generations fought for as a “cover-up for evil.” Now, the storm clouds are gathering on the horizon. We may be the generation that will not pass away.
My Advice – We never fully grasped that to “live as free men” we must “live as servants of God.” It will not be attainable for everyone in the world. But it can be attainable for you as an individual. Only Jesus is the “last great hope of mankind.” The last great hope for you. Make that hope a reality.
