Old Self, New Self

That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:20–24, NIV 2011).

My Musings – “That.” Darkened in understanding. Hard calloused hearts. Given over to sensuality, impurity and greed. That was our former way of life, our old self. We put it off and put on our new self. We were made new in our attitude. This is what we were created for. We turned our back on it in the garden. Through Christ, we turned back.

My Advice – Perhaps you’ve slipped. “You were running a good race. [Now you are wondering what] cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?” (Galatians 5:7, NIV 1984). All is not lost. You can get back in the race. For, “if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9, NIV 1984).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
