The Universe We Observe

What may be known about God is plain…because God has made it plain…For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. (Romans 1:19–20, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if, at bottom, there is no purpose, no design… nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.” (Richard Dawkins). This pretty much sums up the message of many of the leading modern scientists. And when many people say, “follow the science,” it is the scientists that they are following. Not the science. Over the last century, three scientific discoveries provide a much different message than what we’ve been led to believe.

First, there was a time that scientists theorized that the universe was eternal and self-existent. Consistent with Dawkins quote above. Today, evidence of a “Big Bang” confirms that the universe did in fact have a beginning. Consistent with what was recorded in the book of Genesis thousands of years ago.

Second, since the 1960s, physicists have determined that the physical laws that govern our universe are so finely tuned that even slight alterations of many such laws (too much or too little) would have rendered life impossible. The fact is, we live in a Goldilocks universe (just right). Former Cambridge astrophysicist Sir Fred Hoyle states that “a common-sense interpretation of the data suggests that a super-intellect has monkeyed with [fine-tuned the] physics” to make life possible.

Third, molecular biology has discovered that the digital code in DNA and RNA resembles tiny, intricately constructed molecular machines which vastly exceed our own digital high technology in their storage and transmission capabilities. Even Richard Dawkins concedes that “the machine code of the genes is uncannily computer-like.” Code requiring a master programmer rather than blind materialistic processes.

In summary, far from pointing to “blind, pitiless indifference,” these great discoveries of the last century point to the exquisite design of life and the universe and, arguably, to an intelligent creator behind it all.

My Advice – All that exists is precisely what “we should expect if, at bottom, there is divine purpose, intricate design…guided by an all seeing, compassionate God.” So, if you’re going to follow a scientist, follow the original scientist, a/k/a God the Creator.
