Resistance Is Not Futile

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Just who are “them?“Every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus…this is the spirit of the antichrist.” (1 John 4:3, NIV 1984). We need not fear them, because we are children of God and “have overcome them.” We cannot be possessed by them, because of “the one who is in [us] is greater.” But we can be oppressed by them “in the world.” So, we must “be self-controlled and alert. [Our] enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8, NIV 1984).

My Advice“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7, NIV 1984). It’s as simple as all that. So simple that we often fail to do just that. The only “teeth” that the “roaring lion” and “every spirit” from him have, are the ones we give them.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
