Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake. Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” (Ps 79:9–10, NIV 1984).
My Musings – And for a time, “for [His] name’s sake,” and for the love of His chosen people, He did. But eventually, there came a tipping point and His forbearance came to a end. Then, “for [His] name’s sake,” He had to act. He brought them down and His glory departed from them.
I think that my nation (the USA), finds itself in a similar situation. For His own good purposes He lifted us up into a position of world prominence and power. As long as we largely considered ourselves to be a Christian nation and for the most part followed a Judeo-Christian worldview, “for [His] name’s sake,” He delivered us from various trials and difficult situations. Today, it appears as though a plurality of its citizens no longer hold this worldview, and we also may be nearing our own tipping point.
My Advice – Nations rise and fall. At some point God may say, “My Spirit will not contend with [this nation] forever…[its] days will be…?” (Genesis 6:3, NIV 1984). Let us consider what we individually, and collectively as a Church, can do to extend God’s forbearance. This is not a political issue. It is a spiritual issue. No legislation, no political party will solve this problem. For only “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:13–14, NIV 1984).
