Declares The Lord

This is the word of the LORD concerning Israel. The LORD, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the spirit of man within him, declares: “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves. On that day I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness,” declares the LORD. “I will keep a watchful eye over the house of Judah, but I will blind all the horses of the nations. Then the leaders of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘The people of Jerusalem are strong, because the LORD Almighty is their God.’” (Zechariah 12:1–5, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “His Majesty’s Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.” (Balfour Declaration, November 2, 1917).

“Independent Arab and Jewish States and the Special International Regime for the City of Jerusalem, set forth in Part III of this Plan, shall come into existence in Palestine two months after the evacuation of the armed forces of the mandatory Power has been completed but in any case not later than 1 October 1948.” (United Nations Resolution 181, November 29, 1947). The modern Jewish State of Israel came into existence on May 14, 1948.

One might say that modern Israel is the result of two World Wars, the intent of Great Britain and the combined efforts of the United Nations (did not exist until after WWII). But they would be wrong. Only “the LORD, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the spirit of man within him,” had the power to make it happen.

Since that time (May 14, 1948), the “surrounding peoples” and nations at various times have come against her without success. Because God “[keeps] a watchful eye over the house of Judah.” A time is coming “when all the nations of the earth [will gather] against her.” But God “will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves.” “Then the leaders of [all nations] will say in their hearts, ‘The people of Jerusalem are strong, because the LORD Almighty is their God.’”

My Advice – Whose side do you want to be on?

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
