The Company We Keep

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:11-12, 44–45, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “Some would argue that you’re as successful as the company you keep. Certainly, there is a connection between our friends and who we are.” (Simon Sinek). “The prophets who were before [us]” and “sons of [our] Father in heaven.” Mighty good company to keep. But do not be surprised if it comes with insults, persecution, and false accusations. And if that were not enough, we are to respond with love and prayers.

My Advice – I believe many of us, myself included, need to do a bit of spiritual introspection. Would our “company” be pleased with us?

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
