In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. (John 1:1–5, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “But the darkness has not understood it.” In the NIV the light is not “understood” by darkness. The light keeps on shining, but those living in darkness are unable to take it in. In the ESV the light is not “overcome” by darkness. The symbolism is quite clear. Darkness does not extinguish light, light extinguishes darkness. Individual hearts may be darkened, but that does not keep the light from shining. In the NET the light is not “mastered” by darkness. The spiritual forces of darkness may fight against it, but in the end, they will be conquered by “that life” that is “the light of men.“
My Advice – The light will always shine. We need to come out of the darkness into HIs marvelous light. If not, we will be thrown “outside, into the [final] darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 22:13, NIV 1984).
