Must Turn Away

The Lord knows those who are his, and everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness. Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:19, 22, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Confessing the name of Christ (“call on the Lord out of a pure heart‘) is not enough. Genuine repentance (“turn away from wickedness“) must accompany our confession. If we do not “flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace,” this is likely an indication that we did not have a true salvation experience. This does not mean we will never sin again, but if there is no transformation there was no regeneration.

My Advice“It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.” (Deuteronomy 13:4, NIV 1984). Not a legalistic faith plus works resulting in salvation. Rather salvation by faith, with works evidencing that salvation.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
