Jesus answered, “…for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” “What is truth?” Pilate asked. (John 18:37–38, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “What is the truth, but a lie agreed upon.” This is a quote attributed to Friedrich Nietzche, but apparently one he never said or wrote. A similar quote, “History is a set of lies agreed upon,” is attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte. Although this quote is also suspect. Ironically, both quotes may be lies agreed upon.
It seems to me that our culture is increasingly succumbing to agreed upon lies that are accepted as the truth. It doesn’t seem to matter if one leans to the left or to the right. Liberal or conservative. “It [is] merely the substitution of one piece of nonsense for another.” (from 1984, by George Orwell).
It used to be there was a large swath of the general population that lay between the two extremes with an agreed upon truth that revealed how absurd the nonsense was. But we have become more and more polarized with mass migration to both extremes.
This is occurring to such an extent that is has infected the Christian church, the last bastion of absolute truth. While the world system, blind to their own agreed upon lies, become more and more hostile in their insistance that the Gospel of Christ is an agreed upon lie. They have been deceived by the devil. “When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44, NIV 1984).
The sad reality is that people want to know the truth but are more comfortable with the lies. More comfortable with what they want the truth to be rather than what it is. “[They] want the truth,” but “[they] can’t handle the truth!” (quote from the movie, “A Few Good Men”). So, like Pilate, they succumb to the lies of the crowd.
My Advice – “I [Jesus] have given them Your word, and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one…Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:13-17, NIV 1984).
Hang in there. See through the nonsense, the agreed upon lies. You can handle the truth. “What is truth? [God’s] word is truth.” The truth is worth dying for. “For this reason [He] was born, and for this [He] came into the world.”
