So the Next Generation

He [God] commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know [His Word], even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget His deeds but would keep His commands. (Psalm 78:5–7, NIV 1984).

My Musings – How do we teach in such a way that the chain of trusting in Christ and obeying the Scriptures remains unbroken? It certainly starts in the home. But merely teaching what to believe is insufficient. Our children must also be taught why. For they will most certainly be challenged by the people and institutions of the world. But it must not stop there. Parents and grandparents must consistently faithfully model their faith for it to be credible to their offspring.

My Advice – Do not expect those you teach to follow your teaching if you do not faithfully follow it yourself. For once the chain is broken, it is most difficult to reestablish the links. And do not forget to regularly pray for your children and grandchildren, “even [those] yet to be born,” so that “they would put their trust in [Christ] and …keep [God’s] commands.”

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
