They [the Pharisees] tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. (Matthew 23:4, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Like the Pharisees, we (myself included) stand all too ready to condemn the world for the decline in morality. A heavy load that we could not bear apart from Christ, how can we possibly expect them to do any better? They do not need our condemnation. They stand condemned already. They do not need us tying up this heavy load on their shoulders. What they need is a helping hand from someone who has had that same burden lifted off their shoulders. They need our love. They need our compassion. They need our witness that points them to the cross. Imposing the heavy load of Christian morality on a lost world does not bring them to Christ…

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
