The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “As it was in the days of Noah.” The normal context for this was the increase in wickedness while mankind went about business as usual. But in light of these, “the LORD said, ‘My Spirit will not contend with man forever.'” (Genesis 6:3, NIV 1984). So, He set a deadline. “[Man’s] days will be a hundred and twenty years.” (Genesis 6:3, NIV 1984).
God gave mankind time to repent. He did not want anyone to perish then, and He does not want anyone to perish now. He remains “patient with [us].” But as things in our culture today go from bad to worse, approaching the wickedness as “in the days of Noah,” we grow impatient. “Why are you so “slow in keeping [your] promise” of Christ’s return?” At the same time the culture scoffs, “where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” (2 Peter 3:4, NIV 1984).
My Advice – The scoffers are being extended a bit more grace, time to come to repentance. But He “will not contend with man forever.” The clock will tick down. In the meantime, we must continue to be a bit more patient, as more (unfortunately not “everyone“) come into the Kingdom. Some of the “more” could be someone you love.
