They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” (John 4:42–43, NIV 1984).
My Musings – You’re likely familiar with the story. Jesus, the Jewish Messiah, converses with a Samaritan woman. The “woman at the well.” Jews and Samaritans. Not exactly on the best of terms. But in a very short time, Jesus convinces her that the Messiah who is to come, the one she spoke of, is before her eyes. He has come. She is convinced. She returns to the village that likely shuns her to spread the good news.
Surprisingly, they came to see for themselves. “Because of what [she] said.” Enough to pique their curiosity, but not enough to convince them. She was, after all, not the most credible witness. But before night fell, “[they knew] that this man really [was] the Savior of the world.” There is no indication that Jesus performed any signs or miracles (apart from knowing everything about the woman). But after spending time with Jesus, they knew He was who He said He was. “[They had] heard for [themselves].”
My Advice – We cannot not always expect people to believe the Gospel just because we share it with them. Perhaps they seldom will. But perhaps the things we say, the way we conduct our lives, will be enough of a catalyst to pique their interest too. But how do they get to spend time with Him so they can know for sure? To “hear” it for themselves? By digging into His Word. Challenge those who won’t fully believe you, to check it out for themselves.
It is so wonderful to hear our Lord and Savior personally.
