Setting Aside

“You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! Thus, you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.” (Mark 7:9, 12–13, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Clearly the culture around us has “a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe [their] own [desires and beliefs].” But what about some within the Body of believers? Do we not at times set aside certain “commands of God” to satisfy our own worldly passions and appetites? Typically, under the guise of grace. Observing the commands of God does not nullify grace, unless done in a legalistic manner. For when they are observed in obedience to our calling, they are evidence of a life transformed by grace.

My Advice – Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Period. But a lifestyle that habitually and unrepentantly sets aside the commands of God is likely a life that has not genuinely accepted the grace of God.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
