Some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.” He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:38–40, NIV 1984).
My Musings – Imagine the following dialogue.
Pontious Pilate: Joseph, I really don’t understand. You’re one of the richest men in the region, and you’ve spent a fall fortune on a new tomb for you and your family and you want to give it to this man Jesus?
Joseph: It’s just for the weekend.
Once again, we live in “a wicked and adulterous generation.” No longer looking for a “miraculous sign.” It prefers to “follow the science.” But just as God is transcendent from His creation, He is transcendent over science (also His creation, by the way). So, if the “three days and three nights in the [grave]” is insufficient evidence, “none will be given it except [it].”
My Advice – We don’t know if Joseph was only expecting a weekend guest. His disciples surely weren’t expecting an empty tomb. But we have recorded testimony from numerous eyewitnesses (including 500 at one time), which secular history does not refute. If you have not yet done so, it’s time to “sign” up.
