When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.” (Matthew 11:2–5, NIV 1984).
At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. “If you are the Christ,” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.” They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You are right in saying I am.” Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.” (Luke 22:66–71, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” “Are you then the Son of God?” To the first question, He provided evidence. “The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.” To the second question, He provided testimony. “You are right in saying I am.”
My Advice – “Why do we need any more?” We must reach our own verdict. Back then, “the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together” and came to their own verdict. Crucify Him! Which Pilate allowed to be carried out. “Why do we need any more?” They should not have needed more. But they got more. He rose from the dead, and after ascending to the Father He was “seated at the right hand of the mighty God.“
Was He the “one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” He was and is the One. There will be no other. He came the first time to save. He will be the one to come a second time. But this time to judge. Don’t be on the wrong side of the verdict.
Indeed, “Why do we need any more?” Great post.
